Totally a strange & quirky record, but is interesting and well put together, none the less.
November 11, 2004:
  • Mike Doughty just signed a deal with ATO Records (David Gray, Gov't Mule, Ben Kweller, My Morning Jacket, etc...). Skittish and Rockity Roll will be re-released as a two-disc package (talk of unreleased tracks to be included) and there will be a new studio album coming in Spring 2005.

August 10, 2004:
  • I just got off the phone with Sebastian. It turns out he's been working with Randy Kaye on getting together the long awaited Soul Coughing DVD. So Sebastian asked me to post something up here to see what the fans had. Please contact me if you have any good quality videos of Soul Coughing. More news as it happens.
July 21, 2004:

March 27, 2004:
  • I apologize for any lack of updates in a long while. I've been pretty busy these days with my label, studio and thought of buying a house here in DC. --- Well the tide has changed yet again. The live Soul Coughing discs we've been waiting for, have come out! We send mad props to Brady at Kufala. Kufala are taking orders right now, but CDs will not be shipped until the 29th. The shows are as follows:

    Rennes, France 12/03/1994
    Tokyo, Japan 02/03/1997
    New York, NY 08/16/1999
    Berlin / Amsterdam
    Live Rarities

Each double disc show is $20. The whole set can be purchased for $80. Click here for all the information and to order. And from Kufala.com:
We are happy to announce the release of our Soul Coughing Live series. One of the most unique cult bands of the '90s, Soul Coughing anchored a new crop of quirky, unclassifiable bands that emerged in the post-grunge era. Their live shows were legendary and these 5 2 CD sets were hand picked and compiled by keyboardist Mark De Gli Antoni. If you are the superfan and want to get all five albums check out the 4 out of 5 deal. Enjoy.

  • In other related news, Mike Doughty has released another EP entitled "Rockity Roll" - It features 6 new songs. It's just Doughty and a drum machine. It's pure. It's raw. It's Doughty. You can get more information at mikedoughty.com or you can go to his store here. Doughty also has a mini tour planned out for the month of April. Details on his site.

  • News with Yuval is great. He has been in Bristol for the past few months rehearsing to hit up another, but larger, tour with Roni Size. More news on that once the tour has been laid out.

  • And in SCUG news, you must go check out the new Photography Gallery. It's been totally reworked and indexed and there are tons of new pictures in there. Go ahead. Do it. It will make you feel better.

June 01, 2003:
  • The Live Soul Coughing series will not be coming out anytime soon. If anything changes, you'll hear it here first. From Kufala.com:

Though we have tried our best, we regret that the higly anticipated release of live Soul Coughing albums will be delayed indefinitely due to internal band issues. While Kufala will continue to try and make these albums available to the public, we will not be able to release them in the immediate future. Please sign up on our email list and we will let you know when (and if) we will be able to release them. Thanks for your patience, understanding and support. The record business can be a tricky business to be in and we appreciae your understanding...as huge Soul Coughing fans, we're as disappointed as you are.

  • Doughty has also launched a brand new site. mikedoughty.com for more details.

May 05, 2003:
  • So the roller coaster continues... There are some legal difficulties that are getting mended out right now. This is causing a problem with releasing the Kafula Live Soul coughing CD Series. Hopefully in due time this will all work itself out and the good music of Live Soul Coughing will in the hands of the best fan base ever. Be sure to check out the Message Boards as Sebastian (posting as Skink) has been posting there lately. Please check back here for all the news, as it happens.

  • In more productive news, our friend Sebastian is doing shows with Lisa Germano and is working with Yerba Buena which Sebastian describes as "a crazy afrocuban hiphop ting".

January 15, 2003:
  • We have good Soul Coughing news! I've been in contact with Brady, who used to work at Liquid Audio and would get hooked up with goodies from Mark and the rest of Soul Coughing. You remember all the stuff Opus and Mat put up? Well all of that was possible because of Mark and Brady and of course the boys we all know and love who once existed as Soul Coughing... With that aside, Brady has since been involved with starting a Record Label. He puts out live recordings of artists and has been working with the boys in getting out some splendid live releases of Soul Coughing. As of now there are plans for 5 double CD live releases, and hopefully more. Each 2 CD set will be priced at $20.00 which includes shipping (3 day delivery to most locations / 5 days to Europe). All 5 shows will be sold as a set for $80.00. We'll have all the details and ordering instructions as soon as they come in. And for more information on Brady's Record Label click here.

  • From Kafala's website:
In March of 2000 after eight successful years together Soul Coughing decided to go their separate ways. They released three critically acclaimed albums and toured the world. Soul Coughing’s live shows were legendary and for the first time they are being released. Keyboard and sampling guru Mark De Gli Antoni has been combing the archives to find some of their finest performances. Check back in early Feb. for more information on which shows will be released and ordering information.

    PS. Happy New Year!

November 13, 2002:
Sorry for the lack of updates. On a personal side I have been very busy with my record label and finishing my darkroom.
  • In real Soul Coughing related news, Doughty has decided to take down the message board he has hosted for a few years now. People are invited to chat on SCUG's Message Board. Hopefully this will provide an open and positive community for all Soul Coughing fans to chat on.

June 09, 2002:
Mark's site is finally up (http://www.horsetricks.com) - there it's too much there, but i am sure it will be a mecca for cool stuff in the future. Keep a look out.
  • Mark has also informed me that Cherish is out. And if you dont remember it's the latest movie he has scored. Go check it out! It was a Sundance favorite. Directed by Finn Taylor (who wrote the screenplay for Dream with Fishes (1997) and Pontiac Moon (1994) and stars Robin Tuney, Liz Phair, Jason Priestly and Nora Dunn. Check out the Cherish website here.

February 05, 2002:
  • from billboard

The seven-year career of idiosyncratic jazz-pop quartet Soul Coughing will be surveyed on "Lust in Phaze," due March 19 from Rhino. The set will contain 20 songs culled from the group's three Slash/Warner records -- 1994's "Ruby Vroom," 1996's "Irresistible Bliss," and 1998's "El Oso" -- plus scattered rarities including a live version of "Casiotone Nation," a Propellerheads radio edit of "Super Bon Bon," and the non-album track "Buddha Rhubarb Butter."

"Lust in Phaze" will come packaged with a band history by New York Press editor John Strausbaugh and track-by-track notes from frontman Mike Doughty, who formed Soul Coughing in 1992 with drummer Yuval Gabay, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and keyboardist Mark De Gli Antoni.

The group's first two albums were critical successes, but its biggest chart showing came with "El Oso," which debuted at No. 49 on The Billboard 200 in October 1998. The album contained Soul Coughing's biggest single, "Circles," a No. 8 hit on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.

January 10, 2001:

    Happy New Year!
  • Mark De Gli Antoni has just finished scoring the music for a film directed by Mike Stamm. The short 33 minute film is called "Ashes to Ashes." Mark, credited as "composer," wrote all the original music and has this little bio on the webpage. Director Mike Stamm told me about what Mark did for the film:

Mark worked feverishly to assemble a dense, multilayered collage of samples of the
kind he does so well. In the case of Ashes To Ashes, Mark relied heavily on
organs, bells, chimes and harps, but threw in plenty of other weird things
like distorted guitars, clanking noises and sounds I can't even figure out.

  • There are five outtakes from Mark's score that have been uploaded to the website. You can hear them here.
  • Also credited on this film is fellow Horse Trick's mate Joe Bini who edited the film. More information can be found at ashestoashes.net and SCUG will keep you posted as to when the movie is completed and available to see or download.
  • UV Ray will be playing two shows this month. Jan 11th and Jan 18th at Baby Jupiter in NYC.
